Yesterday, as part of the S-271 Helicopter Crewmember Course, participants had the opportunity to observe and support live aerial firefighting operations. A Bell 407 helicopter, operated by the Maine Forest Rangers, performed multiple water drop evolutions at Cape Cod Airfield.

In attendance were representatives from:
- Maine Forest Rangers
- Massachusetts Army National Guard
- Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR)
- Northeastern Forest Fire Protection Commission (NFFPC)
- COMM Fire Department
- Wareham Fire Department
- West Barnstable Fire Department
The training began with a detailed helicopter safety briefing, which included:
Identifying fuel and engine shutoffs
Understanding weight capacities and loading procedures
Recognizing overhead clearance concerns
Coordinating safe approach zones
Attendees then observed various helicopter water drop techniques, including:
Trailing Drop – releasing water while maintaining forward movement
Tie-In Drop – coordinated drop following a prior water path
Spot Drop – precise release over a designated ignition point
This hands-on training is critical preparation as Massachusetts and surrounding regions continue to experience an uptick in wildland fires and face increasing risk due to seasonal drought conditions.
A special thank you to the Maine Forest Rangers for their expert instruction, and to the Cape Cod Airfield for generously hosting this vital training.
